Jaipur was founded by Sawai Jai Singh II and built to a grid, unusual for its period and still legible in the walled old city. Hawa Mahal fronts the bazaar; Jantar Mantar, the astronomical instruments next to the City Palace, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Amber Fort sits eleven kilometres north on the Aravalli ridge, best reached before nine to beat both heat and coaches. Nahargarh above the city is the standard sunset stop.
When to go. October to March. April to June regularly exceeds 40°C; we do not run daytime fort walking in that window.

Having a different guide in Delhi, Agra and Jaipur rather than one person shipped along the whole route made a real difference — each of them knew their own city properly. Chand Baori on the Agra–Jaipur drive was an unexpected highlight.

Being at the Taj gate for sunrise and Amber Fort before nine means two 5am alarms in five days. Both were absolutely worth it — Amber with no coaches in the courtyard is a different building. Agra hotel was the weakest of the four stays.
