What to know about Rishikesh

Rishikesh sits at the foot of the Garhwal Himalaya, at the point where the Ganga emerges onto the plain. The riverside ghats at Triveni and Parmarth hold the evening aarti; upstream, the Shivpuri stretch carries the rapids the town is known to rafters for.

It works well as a short break: a three-day window is enough for two river sessions, a morning of yoga, and the walk up to Neer Garh waterfall. Alcohol and meat are not served in the municipal area — worth knowing before you book.

When to go. September to November and February to May. Rafting is suspended through the monsoon and during the annual river closure, typically late June to early September.

    Bring real waterproofs

Two honest warnings that the team did give me and I ignored: a poncho is not enough, and there are leeches on the lower forest section. Both true. The trip itself is beautifully judged and the road day from Rishikesh is broken up sensibly on the way back. Four stars only because the Joshimath hotel was tired.

Hemkund is optional and I am glad I did it

Half our group sat out day four and nobody made them feel bad about it. The climb is 1,250 m of stone steps and it is relentless, but the lake at the top with the peaks around it and the langar going is worth every one of them. Ghangaria itself is basic — that is the place, not the operator.

Worth going in the rain for

Everything I had read said go in the monsoon and I did not believe it until the valley opened up past the Pushpawati bridge. Blue poppies, brahmakamal, six kinds of thing I could not name and a guide who could. Went in the last week of July and the bloom was at its peak.
