Manali

Himachal Pradesh, India

Deodar forest, the Beas running loud through town, and a wall of Pir Panjal snow at the head of the valley. Manali is where most Himalayan journeys begin.

What to know about Manali

Manali sits at roughly 2,050 m in the upper Kullu valley, where the Beas narrows and the deodar closes in. Old Manali and Vashisht keep the slow, cafe-lined character travellers come for; Solang and Sethan open the alpine ground above it.

It is also the practical trailhead for the Pir Panjal — Hampta, Bhrigu, Beas Kund — and the southern end of the Manali–Leh highway. Our departures use Manali as an acclimatisation base rather than a checkbox: a night in the valley before anything gains height.

When to go. May and June for high meadows still holding snow. September and October for clear post-monsoon air and quiet trails. December to February for snow in the valley itself.

Well run, cold at Balu ka Ghera

Camp craft and food were both better than I expected — hot dinner at 3,600 m every night. Take the sleeping bag liner seriously; the second night was properly cold. Only reason this isn't five stars is the drive back took three hours longer than planned after a landslide clearance near Gramphu.

    The pass day earns itself

I had done exactly one trek before this and was worried I'd hold the group up. The leader set a pace that made that impossible to worry about. Coming over Hampta and seeing Lahaul open up on the other side is the single best hour I have spent walking anywhere.
