Hampta Pass Trek
Manali → Jobra → Balu → Chatru
Overview
Hampta is the classic crossover trek: you walk in through deodar and grass meadow on the Kullu side, camp under the Pir Panjal wall, and drop out the far side into Lahaul, which looks like a different country. The pass itself is 4,270 m.
The walking is moderate — four to six hours a day, with one long summit day of about nine hours including the descent to Shea Goru. No technical skill is required, but the pass day involves a steep snow-covered chute early in the season and several stream crossings later in it.
Groups are capped at twelve. Every departure carries a certified trek leader, a local guide, a cook team and portable oxygen with a pulse oximeter.

Arrive in Manali and check into the guesthouse in the old town. Afternoon briefing, kit check and a gentle two-hour walk up to Vashisht to help you settle at 2,050 m. Dinner together and an early night.2Drive to Jobra, trek to Chika (3,100 m)Day 2
A short, tightly switchbacked drive to Jobra, then roughly two hours of easy walking through maple and silver birch into the Rani Nallah meadow. Camp at Chika beside the stream. Afternoon free to rest and rehydrate.3Chika to Balu ka Ghera (3,600 m)Day 3

The long day: a pre-dawn start, four to five hours of steady climbing to the pass, and a first view down into Lahaul. Time at the top, then a steep 500 m descent and a valley walk to camp at Shea Goru. Nine hours on the move.5Shea Goru to Chatru, drive to ManaliDay 5
Three hours down the Chandra valley to the road head at Chatru, with the Chandra river alongside. Drive back through the Atal Tunnel to Manali, arriving late afternoon. Trip ends in Manali.

How many people will be on it?

When does it run, and why not the rest of the year?
June, July, August, September and October, and the next date open for booking is 3 Oct 2026. Outside that window we do not sell the trip rather than run it badly — passes under snow, a monsoon crossing or a shut ferry are reasons to move your dates, not to take your money.
Can I hold seats before I pay?
Yes. Pick a date, enter who is travelling, and the seats come off the live count for 15 minutes while you decide. Nothing is charged during the hold, and if you walk away it releases itself and the seats go back on sale.
How do I pay, and what happens after?
Online at the end of the booking flow, or over the phone with the trips desk during working hours if you would rather not pay on the web. Either way you get a booking reference, and the joining pack for your departure follows from the desk.
What if I have to cancel?
There is no blanket policy printed here, because permits, mountain lodges and internal flights are paid forward at different points on different departures — and quoting a single number would be a promise we could not keep on every date. The terms that apply to your departure are in your joining pack, and the desk will put them in writing before you pay if you ask.

Camp craft and food were both better than I expected — hot dinner at 3,600 m every night. Take the sleeping bag liner seriously; the second night was properly cold. Only reason this isn't five stars is the drive back took three hours longer than planned after a landslide clearance near Gramphu.
