What to know about Munnar

Munnar lies at about 1,600 m where three mountain streams meet, surrounded by tea estates first planted in the 1880s. The landscape is worked land — clipped tea to the skyline — broken by remnant shola forest in the folds.

Eravikulam National Park, twenty minutes north, protects the largest surviving population of Nilgiri tahr and closes for calving each year, usually February to March. Anamudi, the highest peak in India south of the Himalaya, stands inside it.

When to go. September to March. Mornings are cold enough for a jacket year-round; the south-west monsoon from June brings heavy, sustained rain.

    Paced properly

Six days, five places, and it never once felt like a transfer day pretending to be sightseeing. Eravikulam at opening was quiet and we saw tahr within twenty minutes. Marari at the end instead of a rushed airport morning was a good call.

Munnar walk, not just the viewpoint

The estate walk with a plantation guide was the thing I didn't know I wanted. Everyone else was at the viewpoints taking the same photograph; we were walking a working slope learning how the leaf actually gets processed. The houseboat night lived up to it too.
