Overview

This is a diving week that also works for people who have never dived. The first session is a supervised Discover Scuba dive in shallow water off Swaraj Dweep with an instructor holding your kit; certified divers substitute a two-tank morning at Aquarium and Lighthouse instead, at the same price.

The reefs here are the argument. Water sits around 28°C all year, visibility runs from fifteen to thirty metres between January and April, and the sites off the eastern shore of Swaraj Dweep are shallow coral gardens — staghorn, brain coral, giant clams, blue-spotted rays — rather than the deep walls that make beginners nervous. Nemo Reef and Turtle Bay are typically 8 to 12 m.

Away from the water: Radhanagar on the western side of Swaraj Dweep, which is a long shelving beach with almost nothing built on it; the Cellular Jail in Port Blair, completed in 1906, which is the reason to give the first day to town; and Shaheed Dweep at the end, flatter and slower, with the natural rock bridge at Laxmanpur at low tide. Ferries are the fixed points of the week and they do not wait.

  1. 1Arrive Port Blair — the Cellular JailDay 1
    Arrive at Veer Savarkar airport and transfer to the hotel. Afternoon at the Cellular Jail, completed in 1906, whose three surviving wings and central tower are walked with a guide. Stay for the evening sound and light show in the courtyard, then dinner at Aberdeen Bazaar.
  2. 2Ferry to Swaraj Dweep — Radhanagar beachDay 2
    The morning catamaran to Swaraj Dweep, about ninety minutes across open water. Check in, then the afternoon at Radhanagar on the western shore — two kilometres of sand, shallow entry, and the sunset the island is known for. Dive briefing and equipment sizing after dinner.
  3. 3First dives — Nemo Reef and Turtle BayDay 3
    Confined-water skills in the shallows at eight, then a supervised Discover Scuba dive at Nemo Reef, typically 8 to 10 m over hard coral. A second dive at Turtle Bay after a surface interval. Certified divers take a two-tank morning at Aquarium and Lighthouse instead. Afternoon free.
  4. 4Elephant Beach and a second dive dayDay 4
    A boat to Elephant Beach for the fringing reef, reachable with a mask and fins from the sand, and a third dive for those continuing. Kayaking through the mangrove channel at Govind Nagar in the late afternoon for anyone sitting the day out. Evening free on the island.
  5. 5Ferry to Shaheed DweepDay 5
    The short crossing east to Shaheed Dweep, flatter and quieter than Swaraj. Bharatpur beach in the morning for the last dive or a glass-bottom boat, then Laxmanpur at low tide for the natural rock bridge, which is only walkable on the tide table. Sunset at Sitapur.
  6. 6Return to Port Blair, departDay 6
    Morning ferry back to Port Blair, roughly two hours. Time for the Samudrika naval museum or the Chatham sawmill if the flight is late. Transfer to the airport. Note that no diving is done in the last 24 hours before flying.

How hard is this trip, and who is it for?

How many people will be on it?
Between 2 and 10. 2 is the minimum for a departure to run and 10 is the hard cap — we do not add seats to a date that is selling well. The seat counts on the dates table are live and come straight from the booking system.
When does it run, and why not the rest of the year?
November, December, January, February, March, April and May, and the next date open for booking is 7 Nov 2026. Outside that window we do not sell the trip rather than run it badly — passes under snow, a monsoon crossing or a shut ferry are reasons to move your dates, not to take your money.
Can I hold seats before I pay?
Yes. Pick a date, enter who is travelling, and the seats come off the live count for 15 minutes while you decide. Nothing is charged during the hold, and if you walk away it releases itself and the seats go back on sale.
How do I pay, and what happens after?
Online at the end of the booking flow, or over the phone with the trips desk during working hours if you would rather not pay on the web. Either way you get a booking reference, and the joining pack for your departure follows from the desk.
What if I have to cancel?
There is no blanket policy printed here, because permits, mountain lodges and internal flights are paid forward at different points on different departures — and quoting a single number would be a promise we could not keep on every date. The terms that apply to your departure are in your joining pack, and the desk will put them in writing before you pay if you ask.

  • Everything on the water was excellent. What I would flag is that the ferry timetable dictates three of the six days, so mornings are early and there is a fair amount of sitting in terminals. The team pre-books everything and it all ran, but do not expect a lie-in on a crossing day.

  • Nice touch that logged divers swap the Discover Scuba session for a two-tank morning at the same price. Aquarium and Lighthouse are not challenging sites but the coral is in better shape than anything I have seen off the mainland. Shaheed Dweep at the end is the right way to wind a week down.

  • I have been nervous about diving my whole life and the instructor spent forty minutes in chest-deep water with me before we went anywhere. Nemo Reef at ten metres with a giant clam the size of a suitcase. Radhanagar in the late afternoon is as good as everyone says. Booking the Open Water course next year.
