Overview

Varanasi is not a city to see in a day and a half between flights. This is a short trip built to be slow: two mornings on the river before the light gets hard, unscheduled afternoons, and a guide who walks the lanes at the pace of the people living in them rather than pointing at things from a car window.

The river is done twice and differently. The evening aarti at Dashashwamedh is watched from a boat on the water, which is both the better view and the way to be present without being in the crush. The sunrise row from Assi north past Harishchandra and Manikarnika to Panchganga is the quieter one, and the one most people remember.

Away from the ghats: the weaving sheds at Sarai Mohana across the river, where Banarasi silk is still made on pit looms; and Sarnath, ten kilometres out, where the Buddha gave his first sermon and where the Dhamek Stupa and the Ashokan lion capital in the museum are a deliberate change of register. Photography at the cremation ghats is not permitted and our guides will not negotiate it.

  1. 1Arrive Varanasi — the evening aarti from the waterDay 1
    Arrive at Babatpur airport and transfer to a heritage guesthouse near Assi ghat, about an hour. Rest through the afternoon heat, then a boat upstream at dusk to watch the Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh from the river rather than the steps. Dinner back near Assi.
  2. 2Sunrise row, the old city, and the silk loomsDay 2
    On the water at half five for the row north from Assi past Harishchandra and Manikarnika, with the bathing ghats coming to life. Breakfast, then a walking morning through the lanes to Kashi Vishwanath. Afternoon across the river at the Sarai Mohana weaving sheds, watching Banarasi brocade come off a pit loom.
  3. 3Sarnath, and an evening of dhrupadDay 3
    Ten kilometres north-east to Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon: the Dhamek Stupa, the Mulagandha Kuti Vihara, and the archaeological museum that holds the Ashokan lion capital. Back by lunch. Afternoon free, then an evening classical recital at a private house in the old city.
  4. 4Subah-e-Banaras at Assi, departDay 4
    One last dawn at Assi ghat for the morning ritual and the yoga on the steps — a short walk from the guesthouse and no boat needed. Breakfast, then the transfer to Babatpur or to Varanasi Junction. Trip ends.

October, November, December, January, February and March, and the next date open for booking is 22 Nov 2026. Outside that window we do not sell the trip rather than run it badly — passes under snow, a monsoon crossing or a shut ferry are reasons to move your dates, not to take your money.
Can I hold seats before I pay?
Yes. Pick a date, enter who is travelling, and the seats come off the live count for 15 minutes while you decide. Nothing is charged during the hold, and if you walk away it releases itself and the seats go back on sale.
How do I pay, and what happens after?
Online at the end of the booking flow, or over the phone with the trips desk during working hours if you would rather not pay on the web. Either way you get a booking reference, and the joining pack for your departure follows from the desk.
What if I have to cancel?
There is no blanket policy printed here, because permits, mountain lodges and internal flights are paid forward at different points on different departures — and quoting a single number would be a promise we could not keep on every date. The terms that apply to your departure are in your joining pack, and the desk will put them in writing before you pay if you ask.

  • Two days of ghats and lanes and then a quiet morning at the Dhamek Stupa and the museum. The Ashokan lion capital in person is worth the trip on its own. Our guide was firm about no photography at Manikarnika, which I thought was exactly right and I wish more visitors were told.
