What to know about Dharamshala & McLeod Ganj

McLeod Ganj, the upper town at about 1,770 m, has been the seat of the Tibetan administration in exile since 1960. The Tsuglagkhang complex — the main temple, Namgyal Monastery and the Tibet Museum — sits at the end of the ridge; the museum's account of the 1959 exodus is the most honest half-hour in town.

The walking starts immediately. Bhagsu falls is twenty minutes on foot; the Kora circuit around the temple takes an hour; Triund, the shoulder at 2,850 m with the Dhauladhar wall directly overhead, is a stiff four-hour climb from Galu Devi and the standard first Himalayan overnight for most Indian trekkers.

When to go. March to June for clear ridgelines and long evenings, September to November for the sharpest views of the Dhauladhar after the rain. July and August are genuinely wet — Dharamshala is one of the highest-rainfall stations in Himachal.
