Overview

Bali done in two halves rather than six hotels. Three nights inland at Ubud, among the subak rice terraces and the craft villages, and two nights on the Bukit peninsula in the south, above the cliffs at Uluwatu. Nothing on this itinerary requires an alarm before six except the Nusa Penida boat and, if you take it, the Batur sunrise.

The inland days are the ones people remember. A morning walk through the Tegallalang and Jatiluwih terraces with someone who can explain the subak water-sharing system rather than just point at it; the purification pools at Tirta Empul, where you go in with the Balinese rather than watch from the side; and a Balinese cooking session at a family compound outside Ubud, market visit included.

The south is the counterweight — a cliff temple at sunset with the kecak chant, a day boat to Nusa Penida for Kelingking and the snorkelling at Crystal Bay, and two afternoons deliberately left open. Twin-share throughout, private air-conditioned vehicle with a Balinese driver-guide, group capped at fourteen.

Price is land-only. International flights to and from Denpasar are not included, and neither is the Indonesian visa on arrival — budget roughly IDR 500,000 per person for that, payable online in advance or at the airport.

  1. 1Arrive Denpasar — transfer to UbudDay 1
    Met at Ngurah Rai airport and driven ninety minutes inland to Ubud. Afternoon to settle, then a short walk out to the Campuhan ridge for the light and a first dinner on Jalan Hanoman. Briefing over dinner: temple dress code, water, and how the traffic actually works here.
  2. 2Terraces, Tirta Empul and a family kitchenDay 2
    Out early to the Tegallalang terraces before the coaches, then on to Jatiluwih — the UNESCO-listed subak landscape — for an hour's walk along the field bunds with a local guide. Tirta Empul at Tampaksiring after lunch, with sarong and the option to bathe under the spouts. Evening cooking session at a family compound: market first, then the meal you cook.
  3. 3Ubud — Monkey Forest, the palace, and a free afternoonDay 3
    A slow morning: the Sacred Monkey Forest sanctuary, Ubud Palace and the art market, and the Neka or Blanco museum for anyone who wants it. Afternoon unscheduled — most people take a spa hour or the Tegenungan waterfall. Optional add-on for the following dawn: the Mount Batur sunrise hike, booked and briefed tonight.
  4. 4Ubud to the Bukit — Uluwatu at sunsetDay 4
    Drive south to the Bukit peninsula, about two hours with traffic, stopping at the Jimbaran fish market on the way. Check in above the cliffs, afternoon by the water. Uluwatu temple at sunset for the kecak performance on the cliff edge, then dinner on the sand at Jimbaran.
  5. 5Nusa Penida by fast boatDay 5
    An early fast boat from Sanur, forty minutes across the strait. Kelingking viewpoint on the west coast, Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong, and snorkelling at Crystal Bay with the option of the manta point when the swell allows. Back on the last afternoon boat. A long day, and the only genuinely early start of the week.
  6. 6Depart DenpasarDay 6
    Free morning on the Bukit — Padang Padang or Bingin beach are twenty minutes away — then transfer to Ngurah Rai. Trip ends at the airport. Note that the airport queues are slow at peak hours; we build in three hours.

How hard is this trip, and who is it for?

How many people will be on it?

When does it run, and why not the rest of the year?
April, May, June, July, August, September, October and December, and the next date open for booking is 19 Dec 2026. Outside that window we do not sell the trip rather than run it badly — passes under snow, a monsoon crossing or a shut ferry are reasons to move your dates, not to take your money.
Are flights included in the price?
No. Every international price on this site is land-only: ₹57,500 per person covers the ground arrangements listed above, from the start point onward. Your international flights, visa or entry fees and travel insurance are yours to book, and they are itemised in the "Not included" column so there is no ambiguity. Book the flight after your seats are confirmed, not before.
What does an Indian passport need for Bali?
Indian passport holders get a visa on arrival (e-VOA, payable online in advance or at the airport) valid for 30 days and extendable once for a further 30. Six months' passport validity required. Entry rules change without much notice, so treat this as the position at the time of writing and confirm it close to your departure — the destination page carries the full note, and the desk will tell you what the current requirement is when you book.
Can I hold seats before I pay?
Yes. Pick a date, enter who is travelling, and the seats come off the live count for 15 minutes while you decide. Nothing is charged during the hold, and if you walk away it releases itself and the seats go back on sale.
How do I pay, and what happens after?
Online at the end of the booking flow, or over the phone with the trips desk during working hours if you would rather not pay on the web. Either way you get a booking reference, and the joining pack for your departure follows from the desk.
What if I have to cancel?
There is no blanket policy printed here, because permits, mountain lodges and internal flights are paid forward at different points on different departures — and quoting a single number would be a promise we could not keep on every date. The terms that apply to your departure are in your joining pack, and the desk will put them in writing before you pay if you ask.

Everything else ran well — the cooking session at the family compound was a genuine highlight and not the staged version I expected. Four stars only because the Bukit hotel was further from a decent dinner than we would have liked.

  • Every Bali package I was quoted put us in Seminyak for five nights and drove us out for day trips. Three nights inland changed the whole thing — walking the Jatiluwih terraces with someone who could explain how the water is actually shared between the farms was the best hour of the week. Nusa Penida is a long day and worth it.
