Overview

Georgia is a road-trip country — small, mountainous, and with everything worth seeing within four hours of the capital. Three nights in Tbilisi bracket two nights up at Stepantsminda under the Greater Caucasus and one in the Kakheti wine country to the east.

The Georgian Military Highway is the spine of it. It leaves Tbilisi past Mtskheta, the ancient capital and a UNESCO site at the confluence of two rivers, climbs past Ananuri fortress on its reservoir and over the Jvari pass at 2,379 m, and ends at Stepantsminda. From there a 4x4 grinds up to the Gergeti Trinity Church, standing alone on a spur at 2,170 m with Mount Kazbek at 5,054 m behind it — the image that sells Georgia, and one of the few that is better in person.

Kakheti is the other half. Georgian winemaking in qvevri — beeswax-lined clay vessels buried to the neck, a method UNESCO listed in 2013 — goes back some eight thousand years by the archaeological evidence, and in Kakheti you drink it in family cellars rather than tasting rooms. Sighnaghi, the walled hill town above the Alazani valley, is where we stay.

Georgian food deserves its own line: khinkali, khachapuri, walnut-heavy vegetable pkhali, and the best tomatoes in the region. Vegetarians eat exceptionally well here, which is not true everywhere on this list.

Price is land-only. International flights are excluded, and so are Georgian visa costs — check which visa route applies to you before booking, because they differ enormously in lead time.

  1. 1Arrive Tbilisi — the old town and the sulphur bathsDay 1
    Met at Tbilisi international and driven twenty minutes into the old town. Afternoon walk from Meidan up to Narikala fortress by cable car, down through the botanical garden, and an hour in a private room at one of the domed sulphur bathhouses in Abanotubani. Dinner of khinkali and a first Saperavi.
  2. 2Tbilisi — Mtskheta, Jvari and the cityDay 2
    Out to Mtskheta, twenty kilometres north, for Svetitskhoveli cathedral and the sixth-century Jvari monastery on the bluff above the confluence — both UNESCO-listed. Back for the afternoon: the dry bridge flea market, the Georgian National Museum's Soviet occupation hall, and Rustaveli Avenue. Evening free.
  3. 3Tbilisi to Stepantsminda (1,740 m) up the Military HighwayDay 3
    North on the Georgian Military Highway. Ananuri fortress and its reservoir first, then Gudauri and the Russia–Georgia friendship monument on its balcony over the gorge, then the Jvari pass at 2,379 m. Three and a half hours of driving with stops. Arrive Stepantsminda in the afternoon under Mount Kazbek.
  4. 4Gergeti Trinity Church and the Truso valleyDay 4
    By 4x4 up the switchbacks to the Gergeti Trinity Church at 2,170 m, or on foot in about two hours for anyone who prefers to walk it. Time at the church with Kazbek behind. Afternoon into the Truso valley — travertine terraces, mineral springs and abandoned stone towers — or the Gveleti waterfall for a shorter option.
  5. 5Stepantsminda to Sighnaghi, into KakhetiDay 5
    Back down the highway and east into the Alazani valley, about five hours with a lunch stop. Afternoon in Kakheti: a family marani where the qvevri are buried in the cellar floor, tasting straight from the vessel, and a chacha distillation if the season is right. Night inside the walls at Sighnaghi.
  6. 6Sighnaghi, Bodbe, and back to TbilisiDay 6
    A slow morning on the Sighnaghi ramparts looking across the valley to the Greater Caucasus, and the Bodbe monastery below the town. Back to Tbilisi by mid-afternoon, about two hours. Free evening, and a final dinner at a supra-style table with a toastmaster if the group wants one.
  7. 7Depart TbilisiDay 7
    Free morning — the Chronicle of Georgia on the ridge above the city is thirty minutes out and almost empty. Transfer to Tbilisi international. Trip ends; most Indian connections route through the Gulf or Istanbul and leave late.

How many people will be on it?

Are flights included in the price?
No. Every international price on this site is land-only: ₹69,500 per person covers the ground arrangements listed above, from the start point onward. Your international flights, visa or entry fees and travel insurance are yours to book, and they are itemised in the "Not included" column so there is no ambiguity. Book the flight after your seats are confirmed, not before.
What does an Indian passport need for Tbilisi?
Indian nationals need a visa. Two routes: an **e-visa** applied for on the Georgian government portal, normally decided within five working days; or **visa-free entry** if you hold a valid, used or unused visa or residence permit from the Schengen area, the US, UK, Canada, Japan, Australia, Israel or the GCC states — a far quicker path if it applies to you. Confirm which route applies before booking flights. Entry rules change without much notice, so treat this as the position at the time of writing and confirm it close to your departure — the destination page carries the full note, and the desk will tell you what the current requirement is when you book.
Can I hold seats before I pay?
Yes. Pick a date, enter who is travelling, and the seats come off the live count for 15 minutes while you decide. Nothing is charged during the hold, and if you walk away it releases itself and the seats go back on sale.
How do I pay, and what happens after?
Online at the end of the booking flow, or over the phone with the trips desk during working hours if you would rather not pay on the web. Either way you get a booking reference, and the joining pack for your departure follows from the desk.
What if I have to cancel?
There is no blanket policy printed here, because permits, mountain lodges and internal flights are paid forward at different points on different departures — and quoting a single number would be a promise we could not keep on every date. The terms that apply to your departure are in your joining pack, and the desk will put them in writing before you pay if you ask.

  • Vegetarian, and I ate better in Georgia than anywhere I have travelled abroad. Khachapuri, pkhali, aubergine with walnut, and the tomatoes. The driving is the trip — Ananuri, the Jvari pass, the friendship monument over the gorge — and having one driver-guide for all seven days meant no handovers and no repeated explanations. Sort your visa route out early; that took me longer than the booking did.

  • The 4x4 up to the church takes twenty minutes and I would have walked it again anyway. Kazbek was completely clear at eight and had gone into cloud by eleven, so the early start earned itself. Kakheti afterwards — drinking from a clay vessel buried in a farmer's cellar floor — was the part I did not expect to love.
