Season, route in, and what an Indian passport needs at the border. Rules change — confirm the visa position close to your departure.
Best time to go
May to September for the mountains — the Jvari pass and the Kazbegi road are reliably open, and the alpine meadows are out in June and July. September and early October add the Kakheti grape harvest, the *rtveli*, which is the best time in the country if you care about wine. Winter closes the high roads intermittently and Tbilisi itself is grey and cold.
Getting there
Tbilisi (TBS) has historically been one-stop from India via Dubai, Sharjah, Doha or Istanbul — eight to ten hours in total. Indian carriers have announced and launched direct Delhi services more than once, so check current schedules before assuming a connection. Georgia is 1h30 behind India, and the airport is seventeen kilometres from the old town.

Visa before travelVisa: Indian nationals need a visa. Two routes: an e-visa applied for on the Georgian government portal, normally decided within five working days; or visa-free entry if you hold a valid, used or unused visa or residence permit from the Schengen area, the US, UK, Canada, Japan, Australia, Israel or the GCC states — a far quicker path if it applies to you. Confirm which route applies before booking flights.

What to know about Tbilisi
Tbilisi is built along a gorge of the Mtkvari river, and the old town is a jumble of wooden balconies, brick domes and Orthodox churches climbing the slope under Narikala fortress. The Abanotubani quarter at the bottom is the reason the city exists — natural sulphur springs, capped with low brick domes, still run as public bathhouses, and an hour in one is the correct way to end a first day.
Georgia's claim to the oldest continuous winemaking tradition on earth is taken seriously by archaeologists: residue evidence from the region dates to around 6000 BCE, and the qvevri method — fermentation in beeswax-lined clay vessels buried to the neck in the ground — was inscribed on UNESCO's intangible heritage list in 2013. Kakheti, ninety minutes east through Sighnaghi's walled hill town, is where you drink it at the source.
North of the city the Georgian Military Highway climbs to the Greater Caucasus. Mtskheta, the ancient capital and a UNESCO site, sits at the confluence just outside Tbilisi; the road then passes Ananuri fortress, the Jvari pass at 2,379 m, and ends at Stepantsminda, where the Gergeti Trinity Church stands alone at 2,170 m under Mount Kazbek at 5,054 m. That view is the single image most people bring home from Georgia.

Best food of any trip on this list
Vegetarian, and I ate better in Georgia than anywhere I have travelled abroad. Khachapuri, pkhali, aubergine with walnut, and the tomatoes. The driving is the trip — Ananuri, the Jvari pass, the friendship monument over the gorge — and having one driver-guide for all seven days meant no handovers and no repeated explanations. Sort your visa route out early; that took me longer than the booking did.

The 4x4 up to the church takes twenty minutes and I would have walked it again anyway. Kazbek was completely clear at eight and had gone into cloud by eleven, so the early start earned itself. Kakheti afterwards — drinking from a clay vessel buried in a farmer's cellar floor — was the part I did not expect to love.
