Southern Thailand, Thailand
Season, route in, and what an Indian passport needs at the border. Rules change — confirm the visa position close to your departure.
November to April, the north-east monsoon season on the Andaman side: calm seas, reliable boat schedules and the best water clarity from January to March. May to October brings the south-west monsoon — heavy squalls, red flags on the west-coast beaches and boat trips cancelled at short notice. Do not plan island-hopping in that window.
Non-stop services to Phuket (HKT) from Delhi and Mumbai operate seasonally on low-cost carriers, around 4h30. The dependable route is via Bangkok — 4h to 4h30 from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata or Chennai, then a 1h20 domestic hop to Phuket or Krabi. Phuket to Krabi is about three hours by road around the head of the bay, or ninety minutes by ferry in season.
Visa: Indian passport holders currently enter Thailand visa-free under the exemption scheme in force since 2024, for stays of up to 60 days. The scheme is renewed periodically rather than permanent, so confirm status close to departure. All arrivals must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online before landing.

Phuket and Krabi face each other across Phang Nga Bay, and the bay is the reason to come. It is drowned karst country — several hundred limestone towers rising sheer out of shallow green water, hollowed by sea caves and hidden lagoons you enter by kayak at the right tide. Koh Panyee, the stilt village built by Malay fishing families on the rock face, and the sea stack at Khao Phing Kan are the standard long-tail stops.
Phuket itself is large — about 540 sq km — and much more varied than the Patong strip suggests. Old Phuket Town is a grid of Sino-Portuguese shophouses in ice-cream colours, with the best food on the island in and around Thalang Road. The west coast beaches run from busy at Patong to almost empty at Nai Harn and Naiyang.
Krabi is quieter and more vertical. The Railay peninsula is cut off from the mainland by cliffs and reachable only by long-tail boat, which is why it stayed low-rise and why it became one of the best-known sport-climbing venues in Asia. Behind Ao Nang, the Tiger Cave temple sits at the top of 1,237 steps, and Ko Phi Phi and the Hong islands are the day-boat targets from either coast.

The Phang Nga day and Railay are five stars. The Phi Phi speedboat day is the one where you share the lagoon with forty other boats, which the team did warn us about beforehand. Sea was rough on the way back — take the tablets they tell you to take. Old Phuket Town in the evening was an unexpected favourite.

Going into the hongs through a tunnel you have to lie flat in the kayak to clear, and coming out inside a collapsed cave open to the sky with monkeys on the walls — nothing else on the trip came close. Railay at the end, with no cars and no road in, was the right way to finish.
